Time and a Half Calculator
Time and a half is 1.5 times your regular hourly rate, paid for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) for most non-exempt employees.
Worked example
At $20/hr with 5 overtime hours: your time-and-a-half rate is $20 × 1.5 = $30/hr. Regular pay is $800, overtime pay is $150, for a total of $950 for the week.
Formula
Time-and-a-half rate = hourly rate × 1.5. Total pay = (rate × regular hours) + (rate × 1.5 × overtime hours).
FAQ
Who gets time and a half? Most non-exempt (hourly) US employees for hours over 40 in a single workweek; some states, like California, also require daily overtime after 8 hours.
Is time and a half taxed differently? No — overtime pay is taxed as regular income; a bigger check can be withheld at a higher-looking rate, which settles at tax filing.
