Double Time Calculator
Double time is 2 times your regular hourly rate. Some employers pay it for holidays, Sundays, or very long shifts — and in California it is required by law for hours over 12 in a day (and after 8 hours on a seventh straight workday).
Worked example
At $20/hr with 5 double-time hours: your double-time rate is $20 × 2 = $40/hr. Regular pay is $800, double-time pay is $200, for a total of $1,000 for the week.
Formula
Double-time rate = hourly rate × 2. Total pay = (rate × regular hours) + (rate × 2 × double-time hours).
FAQ
Who is entitled to double time? Federal law (the FLSA) never requires 2× pay — it requires 1.5× after 40 hours a week. Double time comes from state law (California is the best-known example), a union contract, or your employer's own policy.
Is double time taxed differently? No — it is taxed as regular income, just like overtime; a bigger check can be withheld at a higher-looking rate, which settles at tax filing.
